Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Repeat Prescriptions

blue_yellow If your doctor feels that it is appropriate he or she may set your medication up as a repeat prescription so that you may order your medication without having to be seen every time.

Tick the medicines that you require on the counterfoil of your last prescription, then hand it in at reception (there is a grey post box in the car park entrance lobby for your requests). You can also send it in by post or order via the website. If you order via the website please 'uncheck' any items that you do not need this time.

Prescriptions will be available for collection 48 hours (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays) from receipt of your order.

If you enclose a stamped addressed envelope we will happily post your prescription back to you.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not accept telephone requests for routine repeat prescriptions as verbal messages are liable to error.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

From 1 April 2009, the charges are:

Prescription (per item): £7.20
12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £104.00
3-month PPC: £28.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £7.20, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £28.25 and a 12 month PPC £104.00.

How you can help tackle the problem of medicine waste:

Check what medicines you have at home before re-ordering.
On your repeat prescription only tick those items you really need.
If you don't need a medicine now - don't order it this time. It will still appear on your next repeat prescription slip.
If you feel you don't need a medicine anymore, tell your doctor.
Remember, dispensed medicines cannot be reused by other patients if you return them.
